In a susceptible bacterium where MarA is expressed at a low basal level,
antibiotics and other target agents enter and kill the cell. When MarR
senses that the cell is in trouble, it becomes inactive and the expression
of MarA is triggered. When MarA is overexpressed, it shuts down porin
expression (drug influx), activates drug export and readies the cell
for attack.
